Onboard tips to reduce your plastic waste
It’s that time of year when boaters are returning to enjoy Lake Erie’s beautiful
waters. The Ohio Sea Grant offers these simple tips on eliminating your boating
plastics from ending up in Lake Erie…
• Use reusable containers to store any food and beverages.
• Bring extra water in reusable bottles or jugs to avoid using disposable plastic bottles.
• If you are using any disposable cans or bottles, place these items in the recycling bin.
• Use a mesh trash bag to store any trash below the deck or tie it down.
• Take all trash back with you and dispose of it properly on shore.
• Do not dump anything overboard.
• Pick up any trash you see and dispose of it in a trash bin.
• Ensure lures are secured to prevent loss and avoid cutting your line unless necessary. 11 [ MID-AMERICA BOATING ] JUNE 2023
• Remove fishing lines as you see them. Store the line in a container that does not
blow away.
• Use a smoking receptacle for used cigarette butts instead of throwing them in the
water. Cigarette filters contain plastic fibers. MAB
