rivers, casting spoons are employed from
piers and break walls, as well as stick floats
suspending jigs tipped with maggots and
spawn bags containing trout or salmon eggs.
Casting from shore has become very
popular in the Lake Erie harbor areas,
including Cleveland and Fairport Harbor.
Oddly enough, the steelhead trout are
mostly caught during daylight hours.
Walleye, with their excellent night vision,
show up after the sun goes down to feed on
plentiful gizzard shad seeking the warmest
late season waters.
Ohio’s record steelhead trout was landed
in Lake Erie off Avon, Ohio, caught by Jason
“J.W.” Brooks, of Tallmadge, Ohio in June
2010. It was an impressive 38 inches long and
weighed 21.3 pounds.
Because steelhead trout are more
vulnerable while confined in their spawning
streams, the Ohio Division of Wildlife
regulations allow a daily bag limit of just two
fish from Sept. 1 through May 15. In reality,
the vast majority of steelhead trout caught
are handled gently and quickly released.
The daily bag jumps to five trout per day
from May 16-Aug. 31 caught from Lake Erie,
as well as from all of Lake Erie’s creeks, rivers
and tributaries in the Buckeye State.
Karen Liskay of Avon Lake gently
releases a trophy Ashtabula River
steelhead trout caught while fishing
with her husband, noted fly angler
and fishing guide Jeff Liskay.
